Multi-Day Indian Fusion Weddings in Calgary

In the spring of 2025, Diana and Romil held an exciting four-day multicultural wedding for 300 guests, with seven different events and countless traditions and outfit changes. I had the honour of photographing their Western, Kenyan, and Indian fusion wedding in Calgary. Their events took place at multiple venues including Knox United Church, The Hudson, and Rio Banquet Hall.

I felt an instant connection with Diana and Romil. From the very beginning, they had an irresistible sparkle about them. Not long after our initial consultation, I met their families and realized their wedding would be filled with family, tradition, vibrant colours, dancing, and, most of all, love. Because it was a multi-day event with a large guest list, I knew I’d need a strong team to capture it all. I was thrilled to have two second shooters, Meghan and Kristi, alongside me that day — they did not disappoint.

“Tara stands in a league of her own. She made everything so easy.” – Diana, bride.

I asked Diana and Romil to share how they very intentionally honoured their families and respective cultures. Diana comes from a Kenyan background and Romil from an Indian one, and they both lived most of their lives in Canada. Their Indian fusion wedding began with the couple’s deep respect for their elders. This led them to lean on their mothers for guidance in incorporating cultural elements into their wedding. Both mothers worked hard to blend their Kenyan and Indian cultural traditions together wherever possible. This sometimes meant having multiple events in a day, like when they combined their Mehendi, church rehearsal, and rehearsal dinner all in one afternoon.

Speaking of the mehndi, Diana was surrounded by her bridesmaids and female family members, all dressed in beautiful shades of green during their mehndi ceremony. Mehndi by Rimmel did a stunning job with the henna application! My favourite detail was Romil’s name hidden within the design on Diana’s hand. The mehndi is said to symbolize love, joy, and good luck — a perfect way to kick off the wedding weekend.

“From the engagement to the Mehendi, Haldi, church wedding, Hindu wedding, and reception, Tara showed up every day with a calming presence, and she hit the mark every single time.” – Diana, bride.

One thing a lot of cultures share is a love for food, dance, and family, and Diana and Romil’s cultures were no exception. So, they focused primarily on those elements. For their rehearsal dinner, they had both Kenyan and Indian caterers. A staple for any Gujarati event is pani puri, and even before any venues, dates, or events were finalized, a pani puri station was determined as a must-have.

A few particular traditions were also included from each culture. In Luhya culture, the groom’s family is supposed to come and sing a Luhya folk song for the bride on their wedding day, and lay down traditional cloth (leso) so she doesn’t walk on bare ground when going to the church. Romil’s family worked with Diana’s mom to make sure they brought this cloth from Kenya. That morning of their wedding, they sang an Indian folk song and laid out the leso for Diana. This was such a special moment that she and her family cherished deeply.

Conversely, dance plays a huge role in Indian weddings, with family members from each side often performing for everyone. Romil and his family had a few dances planned. While Diana’s bridesmaids — her sisters and cousins — love to dance, they were understandably nervous. Even without formal training, they pulled it off, with Diana joining in as well. It was such a fun surprise! Romil and his family truly appreciated their willingness to step out of their comfort zones and embrace one another’s cultures.

“It was a wonderful time and delightful to see our families blend so easily.” – Diana, bride.

Reflecting on their Kenyan and Indian fusion wedding, Diana and Romil shared how much fun they had planning it and immersing themselves in each other’s cultural traditions. They learned and performed Garba, and even pulled off a Jerusalem flash mob together as one big family. The couple also encouraged guests to wear traditional attire from their own cultures, no matter where they were from. Moreover, they filled their celebration with amazing music — from Bollywood hits to Afrobeats, and Michael Bublé — obviously!

“[Tara’s] photos have such a beautiful clarity and honesty that I adore. So sophisticated, earnest… everything!” – Diana, bride.

The Hudson was the perfect location for this large celebration. Located downtown on Stephen Avenue, it was centrally located and easily accessible for guests. Some guests even walked from Knox United Church, where the Christian ceremony was held, to The Hudson for the reception. I always enjoy photographing weddings there, as there are so many classic photo locations nearby, including the popular “Hudson Bay arches.”
