If you’re a recently engaged couple (congratulations!) looking for indoor locations for engagement photos in Calgary, I’d love to help. The indoor spaces I’ve recommended below are beautiful year-round and offer a unique backdrop for your engagement session. Whether you’re drawn to the architecture and atmosphere of an indoor venue or simply want to avoid whatever weather Calgary decides to bring that day, these locations provide a comfortable setting for capturing beautiful, authentic photos together.

Central Library – Downtown Calgary
Lindsay and Jeff had their engagement photoshoot inside Central Library, one of Calgary Public Library’s downtown locations. Opened in 2018, this library is known for it’s unique architectural design both outside and in. Perhaps the most notable architectural element is the curved half-moon shape of the building that divides Downtown and East Village and is seamlessly reflected in their interior staircase. Local transit riders will also notice that our C-Trains journey from above to below ground under the Central Library. This space offers many beautiful interior elements to take photos at as depicted in Lindsay and Jeff’s engagement shoot. For example, the geometric shaped window frames that allow plenty of natural light in.

It’s important to note that the Central Library is a public space. While we are allowed to shoot in their facility, their general photography rules emphasize that we do not disrupt or capture patrons without their permission. As your photographer, I will ensure we abide by their guidelines. However, there is a always chance that we may need to relocate, especially during the library’s busy times.

Studio Bell – Downtown Calgary

Studio Bell is an elegant and sophisticated option for a winter engagement session or wedding (or when the forecast isn’t going your way). The sweeping staircases on either side of the building offer beautiful natural light and a sense of drama for photos.
Their website outlines their restrictions in detail, but the key takeaway message for wedding photographers is that they don’t permit flash photography, tripods, monopods, and selfie sticks.

Local Studios – Studios at Vic Park YYC
One thing I love about Calgary is how many local studios there are to rent for photoshoots, and many accept hourly bookings. Studios typically offer a blank canvas with room to decorate or use as is. You also get uninterrupted privacy as these spaces aren’t open to the public.

I had the chance to photograph a gorgeous floral setup that my friend designed for her flower arranging workshop. This photoshoot shows how places like Studios at Vic Park YYC can easily be transformed for a personalized engagement shoot.

Local Studios – Studio Boheme
Another studio I enjoy working in is Studio Boheme. It’s a minimalistic, natural-light studio that offers flexibility in terms of styling. I hope these photos of my long-time clients, Ashley and Mark, help you envision what your own photoshoot could be like.

Local Studios – The Study Studios
The Study Studios offers three different unique spaces. The photoshoot below for Ashley and Mark’s 10 year wedding anniversary, took place at Studio Two, a warm and cozy atmosphere featuring a minimalistic fireplace and modern elements. Simple yet full of character, this room offers a simple colour palette that is pleasing to the eyes and allows any colour scheme to match the space. If you’re looking for a quiet and minimal vibe for your engagement shoot, I’d highly recommend this space.
The Study Studios are located in the Grain Exchange Building 815 1st St. SW. Bookings can be made via Instagram @thestudystudios

Restaurants and Bars in the City
For our foodie couples out there, local restaurants and bars are a wonderful way to incorporate your appreciation for culinary art and romance. A great example of this is Delaney and Craig’s at Proof. This location is a local cocktail bar and the couple’s favourite local hangout.

Many restaurants and bars will charge a fee to use their facility, and you may need to work around their opening hours. This was the case for Delaney and Craig who booked an engagement session at Proof before it opened for the evening. This was such a fun and unique engagement session!

Future Indoor Locations For Your Calgary Engagement Sessions
Though not a comprehensive list of indoor locations for engagement photos in Calgary, I hope it gives you a sense of the possibilities. I’ve got a spot in mind that would be just right for an indoor engagement shoot — tossing the idea into the universe!
The Dorian Hotel – Downtown Calgary
The Dorian feels elevated and romantic – think a cocktail dress and heels paired with a tailored suit. Start at their rooftop bar, The Wilde on 27, taking in the breathtaking views of the city. We could end the shoot with a shoes-off champagne toast in one of their luxury boutique rooms.
