Proposals are such a romantic and rare moment. As a wedding photographer in Calgary with over 15 years of experience, I’ve had the pleasure of capturing many engagements for couples to keep as time capsules. I would like to share some of my tips on how to plan a marriage proposal in the Calgary area and within the Rocky Mountains to make this moment extra special for you and your sweetheart.

Tip #1 — Reflect on the Why

Reflect on your relationship and why you’re proposing. What makes a proposal meaningful is when it tells the story of the two of you. Whether it’s the date, the location or the words you say, make it personal.

Tip #2 — Find a Location That Fits

Choose the perfect location. You know your partner best. Are they quiet and more reserved, perhaps preferring a cozy evening at home? Or, do they thrive in the spotlight, loving a grand and unforgettable gesture? Often, the magic lies somewhere in between – a simple but heartfelt proposal in a dramatic location where people are milling about, but in that moment, you’re the only two people on the planet.

Fortunately, in Calgary and the Rockies, we don’t lack for dramatic locations. I’ve photographed many proposals over the years and here are a few standouts:

Crescent Heights Lookout

The Crescent Heights lookout area is a spot beloved by many Calgarians. The downtown cityscape paints the backdrop with the Bow River flowing down the scene surrounded by lush trees. It’s the perfect spot for those who enjoy nature and want a hint of Calgary’s iconic landscape in the moment.

Pictured below is Ray and Hunter’s proposal. Ray (the groom) and I had the spot figured out and I had a chance to meet with him beforehand. He was adamant that the engagement happened rain or shine, and it was such a pleasure to capture this special moment!

“Our engagement took place where part of our first date did – the Crescent Heights lookout point – on a rainy August evening. What started as a birthday dinner for Hunter became a surprise proposal, disguised as a post-dinner visit to a sentimental spot where we planned to take engagement photos one day. Just as Ray got down on one knee against the backdrop of the Calgary skyline, Tara was waiting in the wings to photograph our special moment. We basked in the excitement of the evening while Tara captured photos we’ll cherish forever, before making our way to a surprise engagement party with friends. Thank you, Tara, for all you did to make the surprise proposal so magical!”

Waterton Lake

If you’re looking for a more serene location outside of Calgary, I’d recommend Waterton. This hamlet located in southwestern Alberta offers stunning mountain views and the tranquility of water flowing by.

I had the honour of capturing Diana and Romil’s engagement at Waterton Park. The flower arch took a great deal of an effort to setup and it truly looks magnificent in the backdrop. The setup required Romil’s (the groom) attention so I was able to meet with his family to pick the best spot and hideout before the special moment arrived/

Lake Louise

Another popular spot outside of Calgary is Lake Louise. Known for its iconic turquoise glaciers and lakes enveloped by the Rocky Mountains, this location is beautiful all year-round for engagements.

Brendan and Katherine were travelling through Canada from Australia. When the couple stopped at Lake Louise, he decided to pop the question. What a beautiful winter engagement!

Rotary Park in Calgary

Another nature-filled spot in Calgary is Rotary Park. This spot overlooks the Center Street bridge leading into downtown Calgary and offers beautiful views of the cityscape.

The couple pictured above is Adi and Sara. I had the chance to meet with the groom beforehand to figure out a spot to capture their special moment.

Other Recommendations

Additional locations that I would highly recommend and would love to shoot your proposal at include:

Lake Minnewanka

Lake Minnewanka is completely iconic with it’s dramatic rocky peaks and jewel-toned water. It’s also easy to get to from Banff or even Calgary. It’s gorgeous in the summer and also with snow-capped peaks in winter. Roseanne and Ben chose April and it was perfect!

Emerald Lake

Choose Emerald Lake for its signature emerald-coloured waters surrounded by breathtaking mountainous terrain. Add a celebratory canoe ride around the lake for good measure.

Private Studios — Studios at Vic Park

For complete privacy, consider renting a local studio like the Studios at Vic Park. You can enlist a florist like Tavia from Sweet Bloom Floral Design to create a beautiful backdrop like the one pictured above. It’s the ultimate in romance.

Tip #3 — Enlist Some Help

Consider looping in a trusted friend or family member. A best friend can be especially helpful behind the scenes, whether that’s helping with timing, keeping your partner distracted, or even suggesting a manicure so their hands are photo-ready. When Ray and I were planning his proposal to Hunter, he brought along Hunter’s bestie to find the perfect spot to pop the question. Before Romil proposed to Diana, he arranged for their families to meet at the selected location on Waterton Lake and set up a floral backdrop.

Tip #4 — Hire a Photographer

Last but not least, don’t forget to hire a great photographer to document the moment. I’d love to jump on a call and help you bring your ideas to life.
