Calgary Wedding Photography Blog – Welcome!

Thanks for stopping by my Calgary wedding photography blog.  To help you get to know me a little better, I thought I’d give you a little tour of my client meeting space .  This is where we sit down and I help you select the perfect wedding package for you.  It’s also where my newlywed couples cuddle up with a glass of wine and see their wedding images for the very first time.

One of my goals as a photographer is to make sure that your images don’t just occupy space on your hard drive.  I’ve got lots of ideas.  From canvas prints to a large scale mural, or even a gallery wall, we’ll transform your images into unique and artful pieces for your home.  You can see examples of this in my space, where a former client (hi Rebecca), graces a cozy niche.

Say hello to my vintage bike Bernice?  She’s a permanent fixture in my office and keeps me company during long hours of editing.  She even makes an appearance in the odd photo shoot.

My favourite corner of the office is the pegboard inspiration wall.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of Pinterest, but I still love to cut clippings out magazines and collect swatches for projects I’m working on.  Are you a fan of inspiration boards?  Here are some links to help you get started whether you prefer a digital or a real-life inspiration board.  I’ve got a few projects coming up for Valentine’s Day and Spring but I can’t give too much away today.

Hope you enjoyed the tour.   Thanks for stopping by my Calgary wedding photography blog.

Newborn Photos in Calgary

Today I’m going to take a break from weddings and substitute some squishy baby goodness.  I worked with Kristin and Jon once before, so it was extra special to take newborn photos of their little one, Kadence.  As I was editing the photos of this brand new family of three, I remembered a poem that I heard years ago, First Born.  It seems to be the perfect fit with the newborn photos of this lovely babe.  You’ve been warned, prepare for cute (and don’t forget the slide show at the end)!

First Born

The day you were born
I don’t remember
If it was warm or not,
If the sun shone
Or rain
Splashed across the sky
Obscured
By pain and doubt.

But I know
That I held you
For hours, stared at you
In awe –
And felt the warmth assault me,
Felt all fate old forgotten smiles
Creep back –
Until I wasn’t sure
Which of us
Had just been born.

This little beauty came into the world on Christmas Day and we couldn’t resist a few festive touches.  True story – one of the nurses made these little Santa caps for the babies born on Christmas Day.  Isn’t that an amazing keepsake?

I have to stop here.  Baby K, you had me at leopard print shoes.  How did you know I have a “thing” for shoes?

Calgary Bridal Party Photo Favourites

I’ve been sifting through some of my past weddings and it reminded me that I have photographed some seriously cool wedding parties.  My policy when it comes to bridal party photos is to make it fun and to make it fast, so that they can rejoin the festivities.  Today I’m sharing some of my Calgary Bridal Party Photo Favourites.  I’ll start off with Katherine & Tyler’s Heritage Park wedding.  Bridesmaids + Rides = FUN!

Let’s not forget Krista and James and their Art Gallery of Calgary wedding.  According to the Bride “FUN was the word of the day”.

Even a passerby on Stephen Avenue couldn’t resist joining in on the party!

Jeremy’s groomsmen took the cake.  They brought three antique cars which I happily incorporated into the images.  You won’t want to miss out on the rest of this vintage wedding, held at the Delta Kananaskis.

Katie and Chris’ Spruce Meadows wedding was wintery, sparkly and completely glamorous.  Chris was an easy-going groom but when we met to discuss the wedding photos, he had one simple request.  He wanted a pose like this, with all of their besties.  Happy to oblige Chris.  Catch the rest of their wedding photos here.

Fun Wedding Shoes – Episode 49

Fun Wedding Shoes – Episode 49.  Because I’m just under six feet tall, I spend most of my life in flats.  Today I’m featuring a pretty ballet flat by Nine West, in the palest shade of rose.  After all, glittery heels are not for every bride, right?  Maybe your style is a little more bohemian or perhaps your wedding dress is the perfect length without heels?

When I saw these beauties, images of The Princess and the Pea came to mind.  I had to find a way to bring that fairy tale to life…with shoes.

Choosing your Calgary Wedding Photographer

I want to introduce you to one of my new wedding couples, Samantha and Pete.  They recently hired me to photograph their June wedding and I basically did a happy dance around my office.  I’m introducing them today because we’re going to try something completely new and different on the blog.  They have agreed to a behind-the-scenes look at their wedding planning process, with a focus on their wedding photography.  My readers will get to hear firsthand how they plan their winter engagement session, meet with other wedding vendors, decide on wedding details and make decisions about their wedding photographs.  Our plan is to feature Sam and Pete’s ongoing plans once per month between now and their wedding in June.  I hope you’ll pop back regularly and follow this adorable couple.

I know that there are lots of ladies out there with sparkly new additions to their left hands.  Warm congratulations to all of you.  Choosing your Calgary wedding photographer can be a daunting task but I’m here to take some of the mystery out of it.  Through Samantha and Pete, you’ll be able to see what it’s like to have Tara Whittaker Photography on your team.   Without further ado, let me introduce  Samantha and Pete.

From the moment that I laid eyes on Pete, I knew he was someone special that I just had to get to know better.  We met at a social function through a mutual friend, and the rest was history!  The old cliche “You complete me”…is well, cliche.  However it is exactly how I feel about Pete.  We make each other better people, and our personalities are a perfect compliment for each other.

Our wedding will be an exact reflection of who we are: non-traditional, eclectic, and very colorful!  Since we are fans of the outdoors, we have chosen a spot just outside of the city limits where our intimate ceremony will be held.  I am a detail orientated, planning type of a person, and Pete is more laid back, so we are incorporating the small details that I enjoy, with a relaxed environment that Pete enjoys.  Our guests will be seated on picnic blankets and chairs, surrounded by a beautiful landscape and an old schoolhouse.  To finish off the day, we will be having a small family dinner at a restaurant in Calgary to keep the intimacy of the day in tact.
We are so very excited for the journey that lies ahead of us, and we are thrilled to be working with Tara on our special day!

I knew that Samantha was a bride after my own heart when she sent their wedding inspiration board in our first email communication.  Here’s a little sneak peek at what’s in store.

I’m a huge fan of inspiration boards.  Whenever I’m working on a project, I always collect photos and swatches that help me prioritize and keep on track.  If you need a little help with an inspiration board of your own, check out the wedding blog Snippet & Ink

Calgary Wedding Photography Experience

I had the pleasure of working with Katherine and Tyler in the fall of 2012.  They were and are a delightful couple and their Heritage Park wedding was definitely a highlight for me.  Ensuring that their guests could relax and enjoy themselves was a huge priority for Katherine and Tyler.  From the midway treats, to carnival rides, to a rousing game of the limbo, their guests were completely pampered and had a blast.  This translated into their “wish list” for their wedding photography.  A photojournalistic approach to their wedding photos was very important to them and something we discussed the first time we sat down together.   I think you’ll see this reflected in the resulting images.

This past fall, one year after their wedding, they were kind enough to look back on their Calgary wedding photography experience with me.  Imprint Media took them back to Heritage Park and allowed them to retrace the day.  They started at the Prince House where their ceremony was held, and wandered through the midway, reflecting.  I know that there are lots of newly engaged couples out there, beginning their hunt for the perfect Calgary wedding photography experience for them.  I hope this video will give you a taste of what it’s like to work with me.  I approach every wedding with an ideal blend of photojournalism and impeccably styled imagery, while bringing along my own sense of fun and originality.  My photography is fresh, luminous and perfectly playful.

A big, big thank you to Imprint Media for being so creative and easy to work with.
