Kate Spade Wedding Inspiration by Kari Bolen
This morning we have a real treat. As you know, The Pop-Up Wedding team is adding bright colour and fun into the event, in true Kate Spade style. Kari Bolen, a local fashion blogger, is here to tell us all about Kate Spade the brand, and how to infuse ‘quintessential Kate’ into your wedding. Take it away Kari…
Sigh. Kate Spade. The epitome of feminine, fun and flirty. A Kate-inspired wedding should be overflowing with fun touches like polka dots, lemons, stripes and bows and bursting with colours – orange, yellow, green, and (of course) the signature “Kate” pink. I can’t wait to see how Carolyn incorporates the Kate Spade theme into her upcoming Pop-up vow renewal!
History of Kate and the Brand
In 1993, after working for years as an accessories editor at a Mademoiselle Magazine, Kate Spade set out on a mission to design the perfect handbag – founding her company Kate Spade New York. Her first collection showcased six brightly coloured designs, in which she combined just the right mix of playful and practical. In 1996, Kate opened her first shop in Soho, and by the end of the decade her iconic “Sam Bag” was coveted by fashionistas everywhere.
The company flourished for more than twenty years and in 2007, shortly after giving birth to her first child, Bea, Kate and her husband decided that their shifting priorities called for a change. They sold the company to Neiman Marcus, who then sold the brand to Liz Claiborne, making Kate Spade a brand detached from the designer who bears its name.
Kate Spade New York now has more than 100 shops internationally. New President and CEO, Deborah Lloyd has expanded the company’s horizons, incorporating a fashion collection, jewelry, stationery, eyewear, baby, fragrance, home décor and gifts to what was once solely a handbag collection.
“Our spirited approach, commitment to curiosity and passion for sharing our colorful world still shapes all that is Kate Spade New York.” – Deborah Lloyd (CEO and President of KSNY)

Kate Spade New York’s Influence on Summer Fashion and Decor
The Kate Spade brand has become incredibly influential since changing ownership, making headlines in all of the top blogs and magazines from wedding giants like like Style Me Pretty and Martha Stewart Weddings, to lifestyle blogs like the Glitter Guide, and the Coveteur. Their latest collection blends their signature palette of bright colours with the most perfect travel-inspired graphic prints – think lemons, post-card scenes and map-print totes. I love how every dress in their Spring/Summer collection (excluding the more elegant Madison Avenue) has the ability to transfer perfectly from the office, to a night out, to a casual lunch with the girls.

When Tara asked me to discuss some ways that the “Kate Spade” style can be translated into wedding fashions and décor, I knew I was the right girl for the job. With their seemingly endless array of gorgeous collections, Kate Spade can be incorporated into so many different parts of your everyday life – from what you wear, to the way you decorate your home – even extending to your wedding décor and fashion choices. You’ll want to be there April 13th because Knot Planning & team will be translating this design esthetic into the Pop-Up Wedding!
