While this summer has definitely thrown us a few curveballs, it’s also been a summer of love. Take these two sweethearts for example. Their Barrier Lake photoshoot was equal parts romance and adventure.
Why choose a Barrier Lake photoshoot
There’s a lot to love about Barrier Lake when choosing a photoshoot location. Whether you’re planning an engagement session, a lakeside elopement or a family shoot, consider Kananaskis Country. This cute couple, Janie from Flowers by Janie and Oscar of Castaño Films chose it for a few reasons. The mountains around Barrier Lake are breathtaking and the rocky beaches are perfect for strolls, hand in hand. The best part is that it’s only a 1-hour drive from the city’s edge.
Situated in Bow Valley Provincial Park, Barrier Lake is a pretty man-made lake created by a hydroelectric dam on its north side. On its eastern shore, Highway 40 runs between the lake and Mount Baldy, making Barrier Lake easy to access. In the lake area, you’ll find parks, day-use areas, hiking trails, and a boat launch. In the summer months, the lake is a destination for canoeing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding.

Summer bouquet recipe
When a florist books a photoshoot, you know one thing for sure. There will be beautiful flowers. Paired with these colourful blooms, Janie’s sundress was an impeccable choice for these summer portraits. Lucky for us, Flowers by Janie is sharing her bouquet recipe with us:
- Kensington Gardens Coral Garden Roses
- Pink Ranunculus
- Cupcake Cosmos
- Purple Clematis
- Blue Nigella
- Echinops
This wasn’t the first time I’ve photographed these two lovebirds. A few years ago, I was privileged to capture their winter vow renewal at Spray Lakes.
Here’s a fall engagement session at Barrier Lake, if you’d like to see.
